Chapter Twenty-Three

After the flurry of arriving home, getting Trixie into bed, weighing the baby and writing up in-depth records to keep Trixie happy, Kitty left Meryn organising the room for mother and child, whilst she prepared the thick rabbit stew the farmer’s wife had made for Trixie’s recovery.

Their kindness knew no bounds and Kitty soon learned of the respect and affection held for Smithy and Trixie in the area. Although she tried not to envy them the stability of a home life it tugged at her now and then and forced her to reflect on her own life. Roaming around Great Britain was not ideal, granted she was doing good things to help those in need during the war, but Kitty knew she had lost out on so many things because of her travels, and one of those was a permanent home with a man to hold her tight at night. As she prepared Trixie’s tray, she shook the thoughts from her mind, especially the ones of Michael threatening to upset her, and headed to attend to the exhausted new mother whose life had just been turned upside down for the better.

‘Rabbit stew to build you back up. Orders of Bernard’s wife,’ she said to Trixie who was leaning back against the pillows.

‘Is Smithy back yet?’ Trixie asked hopefully.

Kitty laid the tray across the bed in front of her and shook her head. ‘Not yet, but knowing him he has escorted his patient to hospital. I don’t think it will be minor injuries he has had to deal with. Eat up and before you know it he will be home and fussing around you and his daughter. I can’t wait to hear what you are going to name her. Bless her, she’s a little poppet,’ Kitty said cheerfully, looking over at the bassinet beside Trixie where the baby lay.

The kitchen clock ticked around to ten o’clock at night before Kitty finally heard Smithy’s voice calling out thanks to someone and a vehicle drive away. She jumped to her feet and rubbed her eyes, preparing herself to spring the surprise.

Smithy stepped through the back door and looked pale, tired and extremely muddy.

‘Smithy, was it bad?’ she asked in a whisper watching him peel away his coat.

He nodded. ‘He never made it, poor boy. He was thirteen and slipped in front of the tractor. Trixie in bed?’ he asked, looking at the door leading into the surgery part of the house and to where his bedroom was.

‘She is, but she is awake and desperate to see you,’ she said. ‘Wash and change in here, it’s warm and there’s plenty of hot water,’ Kitty said and gave him a gentle smile of encouragement. She went to the pile of ironing waiting to be put away and pulled out a fresh shirt, trousers and jumper for him.

‘I’ll leave you to it, and go and see if Trixie needs anything. She is extremely tired. Then I’ll brew you a pot of tea and bring it to you.
